Today's Excursion
Well I know.. two days in a row with the same title.. so I'll italicise one.. yes. that will make it different for you.
Okay so my original plan was to ride my bike to work today.. but a) I didn't get up early enough, and b) I was uncertain of the distance and amount of time it would take to get there. So I drove, but when I got home, I got my snack, got my bike down and rode back to the office. Took me about um.. I think it worked out to just over half an hour to get there. I had a wind in my face on the way so part of the way my pace was off a bit.
I started out easy, just trekking along the Kauffman Bike trail.. really I know they did a lot of work to build that bridge across the rail and the tunnel under 444 and all, but first of all, they need to have made a spur that would let out on Springfeild street, and they need to make a connection to the number 2 trail out of Eastwood park. (I think that's 2... seems like it is... one of them I'm always getting wrong though. It's the one that hooks to the River Corridor.) Well anyway.. I headed south on the trail, and then where it crosses 444... I used the bridge, but then I had to dismount and lift my bike over the guard rail to cross out onto 444 and get on the exit ramp down to Springfield.
Springfield street is not so bad, it's all flat flat flat, but the wind can kind of shoot up it, and i had that today some of the time, and it sapped my speed a bit. As i was coming to the end of the strip out in front of the Air Force Museum (have I mentioned this post that WE here in Dayton invented airplanes and flying and that those stupid scrubs down in Kittyhawk that want to claim they were first in flight had absolutely nothing to do with inventing airplanes or flying other than having a moderte prevailing wind where Wil and Orry could test their invention for the first time in a scientific manner before they perfected it here on Huffman Prairie? Yah? well we did. STFU Kittyhawk! Stop telling people you invented flight.) Ok.. anyway as I was coming to the end of that stretch, an older man came up behind me. Now he was clipped in first of all, so he did have an advantage at least a bit... haha but he wasn't going that much faster than I was. His calves though whew... and thighs... older or not, he gave me reason to seek just a bit more effort for a while so I could observe them. *snicker*
Really there isn't much to say, I mean Springfeild street goes through and old industrial section of town, that after hours is basically pretty quiet, and not a lot going on, not much to see. It's not quite seedy... just old and tired. So I arrived at my office (which was closed of course and rested for a few minutes. Took off my hated helmet and waved for the security camera... I'll have to make sure I point that out to them tomorrow when I go in.
After I left the office, I actually went just a bit further. I meant to seek a refil on my water, and then realised I could stop at the place I work for my second job, only the store on Third. I wanted to talk to him about picking up a short shift or two in the evening during the week, so I rode up there.. I mean it was only a block. I took my bike inside and they looked at me funny, but I didn't have my lock. Once I explained that I worked at my store, and that I'd just been out riding and realised I could come in and chat with him in person, all was well again. I gave him my number and availability and so on, and he said he'd just hired someone to work those short dinner shifts but the he'd keep me in mind if he needed one filled, or if she didn't work out.
That done I headed back. This time, I went up Findlay to Monument and picked up the Eastwood trail from River Corridor there. It runs parallel to Springfield and seemed like it traversed faster than on the road itself, maybe because the surface is in much better shape, so I was able to go faster. After Eastwood park, I came back to Springfield again, and then on past the base. One pretty tough climb is that ramp up from Springfield street onto 444. It's long and it's about 30° incline. Me... I just pop it down into granny gear and spin my way up... whew... tired when I reached the top though. From there I came back to the Kauffman trail and had easy riding the rest of the way home.
Total ride time including stops 90 min. Calories burned according to some websites somewhat over 900... Average speed. Looks like about 14... it was 6 up that ramp... and I felt like I was on it for a while. Top speed today, 28.8 mph. Not sure where. My spedo/odo is not in a good place for casual looking. About all I can read readily is current speed. I had to put it there though, because I needed it on the back wheel for the trainer, and then it won't reach all the way to the handlebars. *rolls eyes* Hi.. could we have just one more foot of cable for this please? K THX BAI.
Anyway, sorry everyone missed it again. Better luck next time. JUst wait until I build my quadrocycle. That'll be total yay.
