Ok.. well anyone who happened to be trying to look at my LJ during this afternoon, might have noticed that it kept changing. That's because I was trying to figure out once again what I could and could not do with it. I ended up giving up on the whole Define Me set that I made. I just couldn't get it to look even remotely the way I wanted it to. Even as it stands It's not the way I wanted it. I had to give the headers a color because if I made them clear, there were till lines the same color as my text delineating the banners and they are NOT obeying the margin command for the page. That is not acceptable... so I had to just color across the top. I'd rather to use Flexible Squares which puts all the things I want in the side bar IN the sidebar instead of across the top... but that one, I end up with colored lines delineating boxes the color of the text and I don't want that either. Nebula does the same thing. Frustrating. Anyway, I had to compromise.. So I used an old standby background... ugh.. you know, just a simple sidebar, which of course hardly anyone still uses on their websites, but it was simple and ended a lot of irritation for me. But it does matches the wordhaven website which is in dire need of an overhaul, but I balk at updating over 300 pages, and frankly, there is MUCH that will come off that site once I get to updating.

Now that I think I'm done playing with the very limited settings here, I decided that I needed to make a whole new set of user icons. So I started searching for little dragons... hehe... I had some, but not enough just the right size and color.. each color of button, I had to try several different ones before I could settled on one... Anyway, here they are:

Gold Green Red
Orange Violet

I post them of course not only because I am proud of them.  But also because I want to see how they look against the background.

Well... Despite my irritation about how customization has to be done, I have to admit that I'm finding more and more things about LiveJournal that are just superior to Blogger in so many ways. Expect a few small posts. This one posted with Semagic, and it seems very nice. All the features I'd expect of a word processor, only it logs into the LJ server... it is able to auto detect my music? That's interesting. It also apparently allows me to choose individually whether I want to screen comments to this entry.

It does not have a feature as far as I can see that allows me to change userpics directly, but it does have a link to take me directly to the page where I change them... and also has button for updating the icons it has stored. There are macros that can be defined. Buttons for [lj user] [lj cut] and [lj comm] commands... font commands, font colors... there is a feature that apparently pastes whatever is on your clipboard as a link.. for example, say you copy the address of a website. Instead of opening a make line dialog, you just click that button and it's there. Right there. There is also a regular link making dialog if you need something a little more complicated. I assume that it can handle HTML commands ok too.

bold italics bigbig There's a preview button... You can see that my simple HTML came out just fine. There's a spell checker... and auto replace functions so I'll just test that out too. Spell checker works just fine... and can be set to check before posting every post, just like OE emails. Ok.. On to the next one.

One other thing... it leaves a little pencil in the systray that you can click to get it back. only takes about a third of the memory I'm using with Firefox right now with two tabs open.

Well... I can already tell you that I don't think this is as good... not as many obvious functions. They may be there, but they are not readily apparent. It detected my music automatically without me even having to push the button, which I do like. Keeps me from forgetting... both put not just the artist and title, but also the name of the station I'm using to listen to it. Hmm... It minimizes to a systray icon... uses a third of the memory that Semagic does.. You can add friends or remove them... create groups, access your calendar... but the history feature does not work yet. I don't see a spell checker. Both allow multiple users. So far though Semagic gets my vote. Does anyone else use a client? Any recommendations?

Ok.. I'm not going to test any more of these. The rest that I found did not look like they would be anything close to Semagic. Also many were still in beta stages and all that nong nong. LochJournal frankly gets a big mark against it just because it does not have an uninstall program listed in its program folder. So anyway. Stay tuned for my roommate rant.

Well... being as I'm too damn nice (or too much of a coward... no... it's because I'm too nice and don't want to confront my friend, because any confrontation with him WILL end in disaster, and a questioning of my validity as a friend.) to actually just give my roommate the boot... Let me clarify that part of my conflict here is that my roommate IS my friend and I DO care about him, and I DO care what happens to him... but I DON'T want him to keep living here. I'm going to spend several minutes of your time ranting about him. So anyway anyone who doesn't want to listen to my rant, just stop reading... I'll understand.
