2009 - Project Dump A

I may have shown this stuff already, but I don't remember, so you get to see it again maybe.

Right before I left my former job, my boss discovered that her grandson had (foolishly at age 16) made her into a great grandma. (well future as the baby wasn't born yet) So I decided to make them a baby blanket. My second ever baby blanket, and my first ever granny square blanket. I made it with Bernat Baby Jacquards in cherry berry and berries and cream. You can see from the sample how nice they work together. well I made my blanket and it didn't really take very long at all. I had to hurry too, because I was getting close to my last day of work, the start date for my new job was June 22, and I took these pictures of the last bits of things finished on June 17.

The actual pictures are bigger than this

So I started with a lot of granny squares. Just when I thought I had it all done, SOMEONE in my household stole one of the squares. I did eventually find it btw, among the cat toys if that tells you anything, but I'd already made a replacement square. Here they are all laid out less the one missing.

All the squares. Wouldn't you know that I realized after it was all together that ONE of my seams was on the wrong side. Oh well. maybe they won't look at it too close. maybe the baby will love the blanket all the more as she gets older because of that little imperfection.

After I got it all together I decided it had to have a border, so I did border based on the Tiramisu blanket using the berries and cream. I didn't put a ribbon in this, because I thought that it might make it too much of an annoyance for such a young mother to take care of. She can put one in later if she wants to. Until I got the border on it I really thought this blanket looked kind of patchy and uneven, but the boder really really pulled it all together pretty nicely. I was pleased. I did have to fudge the corners just a bit, but to be honest, I had to do that with the Tiramisu I made too, because the pattern didn't tell you the multiples to make it work perfectly. I had tried charting it, but my chart never seemed to match the real world. hahaha.

After it was finished, I washed it, and I have to tell you that this Bernat Baby Jacquards really washed up super duper soft, but it didn't go all fuzzy, so I was really pleased about that too. It looks really nice folded up, and has great drape, another thing I was worried about with granny squares and all. I took a detail photo, but to be honest, this one shows the detail much better. I'm not as steady as I'd like with a camera. These at least were taken while my Nikon was still working. Later posts, you'll see the difference when I start taking pictures with my phone. But this picture really demonstrates pretty well how soft it is and how easy the drape is.

K, so I finished the blanky, and had almost an entire ball of each color left. So my next quest was to find a use. I'll save that for the next post though. Then you'll get to see what I made out of that.

Note: crossposting to my personal journal. Sorry if you're subbed to me and get a dupe.

Ever thought about making them to sell? From what you've shown us, you do excellent work!

Yes, I have actually. probably not baby blankets, but stuff that I can make pretty quickly I certainly have considered. Things like hats and scarves and wrist warmers and also toys... wait'll you see some of the toys I've been making. hee. I'll have to post them tomorrow.

I think you would find a good market for them! Especially if you had a booth at Yellow Springs during their events.

Ee! and so you did. hee hee. Thanks!

Thanks. I was pretty pleased how this one came out. I wasn't real sure about those grannies...

nods

found the tiniest of crochet needles at gram's then realized it must be for lace making

Oh yah, those tiny silver hooks are for working with thread making lace and doilies and things like that. I have a full set of them but I have never actually tried to do any crochet with thread. Seems like it would be so time consuming. My mom showed me some thread work that she did once and it's so beautiful. I didn't know she'd ever done work like that. I'd only ever seen her do afghans and stuff like that. She showed me a heavy rug she made too. Nice. Really nice.

cool. I've knitted lace before.I enjoyed it but my hand hurts too much now

[identity profile] ishte.livejournal.com 2010-01-05 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
I couldn't imagine knitting it. I tried to learn to knit, and I could do it but it was SOO much more time consuming than crochet. Way more annoying to me.

I'm the opposite. I enjoy knitting more and crewel work

I thnk...

that the inperfections make it special and unique, like it's you little trade mark. I like it very much and move the mismatched patterm, I love things that are different and the same ol' same ol'.

Excellent work!

Yah that's kind of how I felt about it. I figured it wasn't worth taking the whole thing apart just to redo that seam. hahaha... It just wasn't that big of a deal.

ELD sent me the link. Oh, this is such a good idea! The colors themselves have given me a thought for my next project (Lil Cuz's b-day present) HIt's in February, which is the height of summer here, so pink and yellow should do the trick. :)

Glad you like it. I really loved working with this Baby Jacquard yarn. It's a sport weight, but it's nice to work with. I cross posted this to [livejournal.com profile] crochetcrochet.

I'll have to check out that community, thanks!
