Ohio Seventh District

Ok sorry people who are not in the seventh district of Ohio. But this is important.

Seventh district is: Clark, Greene, Fayette, Pickaway, Ross, Fairfield and Perry Counties.

First of all I want you to look at the election records or the last oh.. almost 100 years.  Only ONCE for on two year term has there ever been a democrat elected in Ohio's seventh district.  In 1936, Arthur W Aleshire managed to wrest the seat from Leroy T Marshall who failed to hold it for a third term. Aleshire was upset the following election by Clarence J. Brown Sr., who held the seat for 13 consecutive terms (26 years).  He was succeeded by special election by his son Clarence J. Brown Jr. who held the seat for 9 consecutive terms (18 years) and in 3 of those terms ran unopposed for that seat. Then Mike DeWine came to power for 4 terms before moving on to the Senate, and then Deplorable Dave Hobson who has held that seat for 9 terms (18 years) that we have been enjoying watching our representation instead represent the pharmaceutical companies.  Thank the Goddess Hobson is not going to run to keep his seat.  So the point here is, that it's highly unlikely that that a Democrat would win. So, anyone who thinks a democrat would be best to have in there spending our money, I think you might want to rethink that and choose the republican you can stomach the best.  It's not likely you'll get a Democrat into that seat.

Note, I'm pulling this information directly from the campaign websites, ok? Just so you know. I read their platform and these are my opinions on them.

Democrats
1. William Conner -
Well his plan for Iraq makes some sense, though I don't think it's politically practicable.  His tax plan is a complete disaster.  More Taxes does NOT equal more revenue Bill. It almost always means less revenue because people spend less money when they are paying more taxes since they have less to spend, and that means loss of jobs and further decreases in income. That is even MORE true down here on the bottom.  Sounds like the union bosses have this guy too.  His doublespeak on the mortgage crisis is almost shocking. He speaks as if he knows what he's talking about, but the fact is, banks don't want loans to fail. They don't set up loans to fail. They don't want to have to liquidate a house, and somehow he manages to put some more Union speak about wages and competition and so on and blame that on the housing crisis too.
- NO VOTE FROM ME

2. Jack Null - I can't even find this guy's website.  I gather that he's from Fairborn, is an Army vet, and was the 2000 Libertarian Nominee.  Great way to run a campaign Jack.  No website... two months before the election.
- NO VOTE FROM ME

3. Sharen Swartz Neuhardt - Well Sharen does a little better.  She has a nice front page, which discusses her issues slightly.  VERY slightly.  She wants to end the war in Iraq and reform health care, and more jobs in the seventh.  But nothing about how to do any of these things.  Her issue button two months before the election still says "coming soon".  I don't think it's time yet for Sharen to be a Congressman.
- NO VOTE FROM ME

4. Thomas Scrivens - Can't find a website for this guy either.  I know he's a County Health Inspector... I don't know what county.
- NO VOTE FROM ME

5. Dave Woolover - This guy seems like a nice man. He's got some good ideas, but he's also got some very bad ones.  He's a small business owner, founder of Peppy's Pizza, so he knows what the backbone of America is, and how to work the American dream from the bottom up.  He agrees that our current Homeland Security measures are wrong headed. Unfortunately, on the dark side of the coin, he's in the pocket of the unions, and that's never a good plan. He does not address the Fair Tax at all, but instead speaks of revising the already burdensome tax code we have currently. He makes a statement on Iraq that while it sounds good in political speak, it isn't practicable.   While speaking of securing our borders, he only says to keep out people who mean us harm, and does not address illegal immigrants at all.  I've seen enough.
- NO VOTE FROM ME

6. Richard Wyderski - I don't want to prejudge this guy.  here's his stats: Physician and Associate Program Director Internal Medicine Residency, Chair Continuing Medical Education.  He could very easily be in the pocket of big medicine, and big pharmaceutical for all I know.  Because AGAIN... NO WEBSITE! two months out from the election guys. What are your campaign managers thinking?  I will not vote if I can't see your platform.
- NO VOTE FROM ME

Republicans
1. Steve Austria
- Ok, Austria has the experience to move on to US House.  He's a former Ohio State Representative 1998-2000, and an Ohio State Senator 2000-now and also the Majority Whip.  He currently chairs the Highways and Transportation Committee. So if you're looking for experience, he knows how the machine works.  Issues? I can't find his issues... looking at his website... Ugh.. he seems to think Hobson was a GOOD Congressman.  Calls him a 'mentor'.  I can hope he's just being political and polite.  However... I can't find his issues.  His experience makes him viable. His association with Hobson concerns me. I emailed to ask about his stand on the issues.
- UNDECIDED
Edit as of 2008/01/28: Not voting for Austria. No email back Re: the questions I sent him about the issues. Not a good political move to ignore a potential vote.

2. Dan Harkins - This guy I like even though he has no experience on the legislative side of the law yet.  He supports the Fair Tax.  He has a Tax Law degree, which gives him wonderful credibility when speaking of how complicated the tax code is, and when speaking of how the Fair Tax will work.  He supports securing our borders and giving back to Americans the alleged "jobs Americans don't want to do". He doesn't waste my time with right to life or religious pandering.  And what he states about his platforms he states very clearly with no mumbo jumbo speak that is so common with other politicians.  I want to know more about this man.  I don't know if he's a viable candidate.  I wish he was for certain.  It might behoove him to take a term or two in the state house and senate first and then move forward to the US house.
- UNDECIDED
Edit as of 2008/01/28: Harkins is also going to get a no vote from me. I like some of his views, and think he has the credibility to do well supporting the Fair Tax. But I really think he lacks experience and he would do better to work a couple of terms in the Ohio House first and then run for US House again in a few years. He's pretty young, so I think he can do that.

3. Ron Hood - This man has some experience too. National Right to Work Committee Lobbyist, Former State Representative 1998-2006, 2006 State Senate Candidate for nomination.  Unfortunately he has no independent thought. He spouts the far right republican line.  This includes being against a woman's reproductive rights, and anything outside of his conception of a 'traditional' marriage.
- NO VOTE FROM ME

4. John Mitchel - Guy has military experience, Works at Wright Patt.  Has an MBA in Economics.  He writes a nice personable letter on the front page of his website. You know, like he's the guy next door, just wants to help out.  Doesn't want to run but feels compelled to do so.  He calls his issues "solutions" that's cute.  Family Values: Ok, he has a sort of compromise here. He's against same sex marriage being called 'marriage' but he doesn't oppose corporations being allowed to offer benefits etc to same sex partners. that's a step in the right direction.  He says " I defend the rights of individuals to live their private lives without government interference as long as they do not infringe on the rights of others in the process." That's a good stance.  This guy talks like a Constitutional Libertarian really.   He supports the Fair Tax. Fully and completely.  Supports enforcement of current immigration laws (kudos to that) and not a need for more laws (more kudos).  He supports bringing our troops out of Iraq and letting the Iraqi's handle it.  I don't know if that's possible right now.  I think it's time to start thinking about it though.  Supports the second amendment for law abiding gun owners.  Good.  The thing about that is, that if you make guns illegal, then the only people with guns will be the bad guys.  Responsible well ordered private ownership is guaranteed by the constitution. Supports TERM LIMITS for congressmen. YAY!  and says he'll lead by his example and limit himself to 6 terms 3 terms (6 years total).  He hates the so called "Patriot Act". That abominable thing.. it needs to go.  Well, obviously this is the one I have the most to say about and I see very little bad.  If he doesn't go far enough on some issues, he is not afraid to take steps in the correct direction. That's good. This man is a libertarian across the board, running on the Republican ticket.  I think he has my vote.

Bias

You are a republican i'm assuming, and i've noticed you have no taste for any democrats and all republicans are undecided or your choice. It upsets me to see that you vote on party, rather than entire issues, but hey at least your party can be popular even if the world is in turmoil...GREAT JOB!

Well, You know what happens when you assume.

You are actually 100% wrong. You'd know that if you'd actually READ what I had to say about each of these candidates and why they might or might not get my vote. I'm very clear on that.

Seventh District has not (as I stated) had a democrat win that seat since 1936. that's not likely to change, even with redistricting, the demographic has not changed significantly enough. So that couple with the fact that none of the Democrats running are qualified in the least... nor supportable by anyone with any understanding of our government, then it goes to follow that since it's more likely going to be one of the Republicans that takes Hobson's seat, then I'd better have a say in WHICH one is ultimately sent up for Election in November. It doesn't MATTER which Democrat is nominated. But it DOES matter which republican is, becuase I want someone who will support the Fair Tax, who has experience, will enforce our borders and the second ammendment and will vote to get rid of that abomination the patriot act. He is even willing to come a few steps towards compromise on same sex marriage. He doesn't try to shove his personal god down everyone's throat and make us all follow the tenets of his religion.

So bear in mind that you can't choose a candidate just because you scanned someone's livejournal... it's clear that all you did was look at the name of the candidates and how I said I woudl vote, and didn't look at any of my reasons. I seriously doubt you'll stick around to read this.

P.S. we are all biased. It's human nature. You were biased against me as soon as you saw that I found the Rep candidates more viable. So biased that you didn't even stop to ask why.

Term limits

Thank you for your astute analysis on the 7th Congressional race in the Republican primary, however I need to correct the record. I support 6 year (3 terms)limitations, not 6 terms.

Cheers,

Mitch

Thanks for the correction on this. I noticed that on your website the other day, but missed correcting it here.
