Whenever I exercise I notice that while the not fat parts of me get nice and warm and stuff, that the 'fat' parts of me when I am finished are cold... I mean seriously cold compared to the rest of my body. What the hell? What's up with that? I'm not kidding. This is really weird. I mean, I can go roller skating and really skate hard (and I do... I'm a good skater, and when I skate, I dance on my skates and really work out.) When I ride my bike, it's usually something involving distance hills and an average speed of at least 14 mph if not better. (depends on my terrain... sans hills I might ride 30 miles on the flat with an average of 18 instead. But when I get done with either, I can touch my body in different places and anyplace that has fat (maybe it's subcutaneous fat, you know?) is very cool. I notice this when I go to take off my sweaty clothes, and my forarms cross over my belly with my shirt of something like that, ok? then I'm like.. woah why is my fat so cold? it's like it's protecting itself from getting burned up by freezing itself or something.
Note that I say 'fat' parts. This is becuase at 134 pounds and 5 foot 5 inches. (That's 60.7 kg and 1.65 m) I am obviously anything but fat. However, I do have places that are just ... well sort of blubbery... in particular my belly. I don't mind. Venus DeMilo had curves, I have curves. It's all good.)
Ok, so anyway, that's my question for the day.
Today I sat on my ass for a while when I got home. And then just sort of got up and got my bike down off the rack. I hadn't ridden for several days. I sulked all weekend becuase no one would ride with me, and the weather is pissing me off becuase it's too chilly. I had to wear my long tights to ride today.
Anyway, I decided almost right away to stick mostly to roads and not path. So I put my (hated) lid on (I say hated but really now that I have one that actually fits properly, and is of excellent quality (thank you Daddy), I don't really mind it that much) and set out. I did ride up the path up Kauffman, just becuase that's easy, it's less than a mile, and then it dumps you on the streets. So I cut through the neighborhood below town, went up to Xenia and then cut back over to Central again (rather than just continuing up Central where the path dumps me.) From Central, I turned on Emerson. I don't know why. I know some people who live there, so I think that's why I tend to turn down that street when I'm up that way.
From Emerson, I went on up Maple, and then realised that I wanted Central (see... habit) so I cut back through on uh... Whittier maybe? and went on up central, across 444 and then eventually I turned on Sandhill. Sorry Demon, I did not wait for you. You stood me up twice for this climb, and I sulked enough about that. So I just climbed up it with out you. The first climb was a little stiff. I was just under the 5 mile wall, so I had the wall to deal with as well as the climb. I came to a park about halfway up. Convenient place to put a portajon I say... I utilized said jon. Yay for portajons with the little urinal... becuase girl or not, I can use that and never have to touch anything in there except the toilet paper, and not that if I have a wipe in my pack. (I didn't)
Well anyway, having had a pee and a drink, I headed on up the hill. The rest of Sandhill is in about three stages, none of them particularly difficult. It dumps back out on 444 up by I-675. So from there I came back down 444. That was where I made my top speed of 29.3 mph. When I got down to Maple, I turned south on Maple. A guy pulled out in front of me even though he was looking right at me and I was going 20 mph down Maple. Asshole, so I had to slam on my brakes. to keep from hitting him or crashing and burning trying to avoid the moron. People... do know that if you are at a stop sign, and someone is on a bike in a traffic lane that crosses in front of you, and they do not have a stop sign the bike DOES HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY. You should not just pull out in front of them and expect them to slow down for YOU. Anyway, after that I crossed back over on Emerson to Central. At which point, I realised that I didn't want Central, that I wanted to climb Maple hill. So I went back up Emerson, to Maple, and stopped at the store at the corner of Xenia and Maple for a fresh bottle of water. The guy in there, knows me since I stop in pretty well, and complimented me on my legs. haha... So I showed them off a little in my tights.
Now I set out again. Maple hill, I think I've probably mentioned before that it's first climb is over the arch bridge that goes over the small rail yard and the main railroad through Fairborn. It's a pretty steep arch, but not a very long climb. Then you ahve the downhill. I generally climb this on the sidewalk, becuase there is absolutely no curb on this bridge. And people drive like morons over it. So I duck onto the sidewalk, climb over the bridge and then duck back off the sidewalk onto the road again. After that hill there is a little flat/low incline which is nice for a little rest. There's also a carry out right htere, which someimtes is where I stop for fresh water. Today I had it already so... I went on. The rest of Maple comes in three stages. None of them are terribly hard. Usually I hit them at pretty decent speed, but towards the top of each, I am usually starting to slow down a bit. I no longer take these last three inclines in granny gear. The arch? Yah.. sometimes granny gear. Depends on what kind of start I get, and that depends on which direction I'm coming from.
During my climb up Maple hill, a lady came to a stop sign, only instead of stopping at the stop sign, she stopped way past it with her nose out in traffic.. right in my path.. causing ME and several cars to have to swerve around her. Stops signs mean stop.. not slow down and then stop once you're already out into the main road. People need to learn this... and she's looking right at me like she expects me to stop for her or something. WTF drivers!? Well, anyway... I made it to the top without anyone hitting me. I did have a guy behind me who didn't seem to want to give me room to go around a guy who though it was ok to park his truck at the side of the road... I signalled while he was back there, and he seemed to think that meant "speed up and try to pass me so I ram this truck I'm trying to get around"... instead of "hold off until I get around this truck, huh?" Well I made it to the top unscathed. I really usually don't have so many stupid people driving around me. Fairborn's pretty used to lots of cyclists, so I don't know what the deal was today.
Once I reached the top of the hill, I thought. You know, I did say I would stop over there and take a look at
brianmbeck's brakes and make sure they were adjusted properly so that he would not kill himself by being thrown over the handlebars again upon stopping. Visited with him and
evilpenguini for a few minutes, looked at the brakes which look fine now.
evilpenguini gave me a pair of star shaped blinker lights. Thanks! I put one of them on the back of Mikey and turned it on. Then I headed home.
Dayton Yellow Springs Road is under massive construction. They are widening it. I suppose it's too much to hope for that they might put a multiuse sidewalk along there too... but anyway, the construction made it a little more difficult to navigate, and it was starting to get dark. I went all the way down Dayton Yellow Springs to Kauffman rather than cutting through the neighborhood as I usually do. So at the end I had the little hill before my house to climb up, but I just popped it down into granny gear and spun up nice and easy to cool off. Then when I got back home I was reminded of that weird cold fat thing. hahaha.
