Why do I read bad fan fiction?
2006-Dec-14, Thursday 21:33No really.. .why do I do it? I find something that is just plain bad, and yet I keep reading it and reading it... It's like I'm in stunned horror at how bad the English is... how many blatantly obvious plot devices there are. "As luck would have it, he forgot something from his room just as she was in there snooping around" Guh? What writer can't think up a better reason for two people to end up in the same room alone together? If luck would have it, can't you at least write out the circumstances? She thinks she lost something in there, so she steals the spare key to the house, and goes up and starts snooping in his room for it? Why not just ASK him if he's seen it? Well obviously because they wouldn't end up in the same room together, and she wouldn't see what he doesn't want her to.... and if he didn't magically forget something at home, he wouldn't be home at this time to CATCH her at it... Ugh... (this is just an example).
One of my very favorite misspellings is: Supposively. Right... the word you are looking for is SUPPOSEDLY... as in... "in a manner which was supposed." There is no such word as supposive... it is supposed as in alleged or assumed. STOP SAYING SUPPOSIVELY! That's not a real word, you just made it up! I don't care how many times you've heard other people say it that way, they are ignorant and don't know how to speak English. Another recent one that I read in a very bad fan fiction which I have stared at in disbelief for about 9 chapters so far and amazingly will continue to stare at... (perhaps I'm hoping it will get better because it's a pairing I want to see and never see.) Obviously the real deal is that if I want to see this pairing happen I'll have to write it myself... Uh... anyway, this recent one was the word perspective being used in place of the word perceptive... twice... in one paragraph... in two concurrent sentences! YAY! DAMN! Get a beta reader! K'Thanks
Note to others: I also read a lot of good fan fiction, and some that is poorly written, but tells a great story... so I continue to read despite the poor skills displayed. I also reada lot of er... some eh... very little really excellent fan fiction. I read one a while back that I think I sent up a link to because I liked it so much, and commented to the author how much I had enjoyed the story... then proceeded to ignore her response to me... uh... I better get on that.. especially after ranting about how people have been ignoring emails I send them. (this is still happening btw, it seems no matter how much I rant at certain inviduals, nothing will ever change. Turned off receipts for a while, but I see that I'll have to turn them back on so that when I send an email that actually NEEDS to be got, I will at least know it got gotten. (YAY! English rocks!) So anyway, yah...
Uh... in other news (fanfiction news) the smut I insisted I was not writing actually now is officially smut that I'm not writing... because it's completely morphed itself into a legitimate story which to date has zero smut, and where there is smut, I allege (i.e. suppose) that it will be much more tasteful than the smut originally planned... this is largely because the pairing has completely changed from one I hate, to one I like. Therefore any alleged (supposed) pairing other than the one currently planned (and liked) will only be in the form of a bad practical joke, with alcohol involved, which evidently (supposedly) [according to my brain] will be turned around on the practical joker in an amusing if disconcerting way. It may in fact have such a bad effect on the original joker as to cause more alcohol to be consumed very quickly, along with a flagrant attempt to prove to others that the joker is in fact NOT GAY. *snicker* (I expect that will leave some wondering)
Now I will stop this... Dinner is eaten, and I must get back to this terrible fan fiction... It's either that or actually WRITE a few words of my own that I claim to be creating. Hmm.. Maybe I'll just go smoke my cigar for a while and think about this.
