So, if you don't know this about me... I don't really spend a lot of time on my computer in Summer anymore. Generally speaking, I have other things that I want to do than sit on my ass in front of a computer. What this ends up meaning is that I don't write much in Summer either.

My activities have been different this year, because I haven't been feeling exactly stellar most of the year due to (probably stress induced) GERD. I'm doing better now. I had an upper endoscopy in which the doctor stretched a stricture. After the procedure I was really sick for two weeks and missed three weeks of work because it took me another week to get my strength back. GI doc thinks that I probably had a GI tract infection, backed up by the fact that the morning of the procedure I had some low belly pain which I mentioned to them, but I though it was just a little IBS due to being pretty nervous about my procedure. She said if that was the case, probably being inflated for the procedure might have just aggravated an already unpleasant bug. Also, my meds had recently been changed and turned out to be less effective so I was feeling worse instead of better. Went back to the original med, got the infection resolved and now things are going better and I feel more like myself except I still have to take a damned pill every morning, which I don't like. >_<

The good news is that as unwell as I have felt for the last 9 or 10 months, tests have verified that there is nothing seriously wrong. Just uncomfortable, and nerve wracking (and the nerve wracking part has probably contributed to how bad I've felt, and having those fears laid to rest is probably also going a long way towards me feeling more like myself, since this was probably stress induced in the first place.

Now Summer is almost over and I haven't accomplished much that I wanted to, but at least I'm feeling like myself the majority of my days. YAY! I didn't get the house painted. Can't really afford it right now. Next year for sure. My brother's estate will settle from probate pretty soon, and I'll have a little inheritance most likely so next year I'll probably just some of it to hire professionals instead of us doing it ourselves. Wanted to fix the gutters as well, which I could normally do myself, but haven't felt well enough to invest myself in a project like that. I wanted to start building my tiny house on the trailer I inherited from my brother. I totally planned to do that this summer, but I really didn't start feeling like myself again until maybe 3 weeks ago, so I'll make plans to start that as soon as the weather is nice enough next spring rather than start now, and have it sit half finished through Winter. Nope. Seems stupid to do that.

This weekend I'm going to go see Duran Duran. I'm excited about that, and also about getting to go with my friend who lives too far away to visit often, so I haven't seen him in quite a few months now. YAY! Music Festival type thing.

I managed to get the Irish Session going again at our local Irish Pub which is also awesome, but it's slow going because it's been two years, and now it's on a different day, and some of the original gang aren't as available as they would have been if I'd managed to get it on the same day we always played. But it's happening. Slowly but surely we're getting a group of regulars to come and play with us, and relearning the songs and tunes based on who knows what.

Now I think I'll try to spend a little time writing, since I'm up here in the Creation Room, windows open, and pleasant weather, cicadas singing outside. I'll try to speak more regularly now. We'll see. I do go long stretches. lol

Today, I finally got my brothers clothes donated. It took a minute because I wanted them to go to a service that would help veterans. Neither of us served, but our father was a Korean War era army veteran who served in Munich during the Korean War. Fortunate for us, as it increased both of our chances to have him as a father exponentially as he was spared (at the last minute from what I understand. His platoon was slated for Korea, but at the last minute a runner came onboard the ship with new orders and they went to Germany to serve in the restoration.) I felt like my brother would have like having his clothes got to help vets.

These four boxes have sat in my living room since January when I went over to his house and packed them up. I finally found a number for Vietnam Veterans of America that was supposed to service my area, that someone answered and advised me that they didn't, but when I ask if there was someplace that I could just drop them off, she gave me an address, and we immediately loaded Jana's car and took them over. So yay. that's done.

Also, my Windshield got broken in a windstorm last Wednesday night... Safelite (usually so quick) didnt' come until Monday and then the glass they loaded the technician with was BROKEN... so he put me off almost another week until Friday and asked me if that would be CONVENIENT???... I was livid. Not with him per say, but the fact that they did not have another windshield in stock for my car. This car is extremely popular in this area, and the windshield for it ranges 5 years worth of these little cars running around all over the place here. I see them ALL THE TIME. So why would you not have these in stock as the norm? You wanna tell me that nobody with a 2009-2014 Fit ever breaks their windshield? UGh... So Missed work Thursday dealing with getting that started. Took a personal day Monday to be there to the windshield technician got a ride to work Friday and Saturday (miserable... no place to eat my lunch but in the pokey break room. No place to sit outside... no car to sit in for lunch). The technician said it was safe to drive, so I did drive to work Tuesday and will tomorrow, but now on top of trying to see through a spidered windshield, the weather is foul and rainy because Ohio in April. AND I will have to burn ANOTHER personal day on Friday to hopefully actually get a new glass for my windshield. UGH.

So that's been my life this week.

Oh wait. Our Irish Session... After three days of arguing about it last week (from about 3 people who don't like the Pub setting of our Irish Session that started at The Dublin Pub and has only not been there because of this pandemic shutting the world down. After all the arguing and negation and eventually this trio actually casting aspersions against the pub, *I* gained an advocate who is WAY more connected with the Irish Session and Contradance community than I am or for that matter any of the annoying trio/quad. With his help, the Session is RE-Established at the Pub where it started, just on a new day, so we had a GREAT planning session on Monday, and even played a little music. First OFFICIAL session next Monday. So in all that obnoxiousness, some good stuff happened too. lol

I have had a busy couple of weeks... Stupid work schedule.  But here is something I needed to share because of how often I see these kinds of things.  Due to reading MegaTokyo I can read |_337 in several dialects quite well, but I agree with this whole thing, especially in my intense dislike of things like letters and numbers used in place of words.  (though I may occasionally say things like OIC... does that make me a hypocrite? I just hate things like "I am here 4u" and especially "I this Ur's?"

So this weekend is the Dayton Celtic Festival. After my 7 hour shift at the ARC Store for our very last day ever, I went home and washed my feet, chilled for an hour and then walked up from my house in South Park to the Celtic Festival at Riverscape ( about 2.1 miles). I  met up with two very old friends and hung out with them at the first beer line for a while as I enjoyed my first Guinness. I got a bridie and shared a table with/hung out with a dude named Tony who did a 'freak show' and a lady from the CitiFolk festival for a while as I enjoyed my second Guinness. Taught Tony's five year old daughter about how to play my flute. I saw a couple of people I know from The Dublin Pub.  (No seriously, I will totally just walk up to strangers if I'm alone and ask them if they mind if I share their table rather than standing/sitting alone at a table by myself. It's a matter of boring vs interesting opportunity to meet other people, and this is what I did with this Tony guy. I chose his table because it would mean not having the setting sun in my eyes while I enjoyed my bridie (which I love). I even played my flute for them a little after Tony had already suck a nail up his nose with a hammer two or three times and ate fire several times.)

I ran into a couple more friends just after that, and the three of us which are (informally) Celtic Ink walked around for a couple of hours, during which I peed many times and enjoyed my third Guinness bought a package of roasted almonds and a thing of short bread. (yes I shared both.) some other people we knew one of whom gave me 5 tickets she decided not to use. ( you buy tickets in advance and use them to buy beer/wine (this helps them to control inventory) whenever you want from a different line.) Welcome to my 4th Guinness. (some of which I shared with G).

We also ran into a guy we play music with at The Dublin Pub, but when he got finished helping out with a mutual friend's booth (where I actually did end up buying a lovely claddagh ring which I really wanted) he met up with family and was not available to play with us. I'll try to remember to take a picture of the ring later. It was inexpensive, but I love it.

We eventually settled down at the tables near the stage at Jefferson street. (The hell if I know which one it is.) and played some Irish music ourselves, gathering a small group of listeners. That was a good time. Then Kat and Grant headed home and I set out on foot again to walk the 2 miles back to South Park. Ok.. I worked on my feet for about 8 hours before this excursion, so my feet a a bit sore now. But I had a great time and am glad I went.

I hope some people I know are going tomorrow.  I'm game.  I know that Dulahan is playing at um... 13:20 hours, Scythian at 14:40 and then Gaelic Storm at 16:30. There is also a bunch of Irish dance starting at 14:40 which I might have to see. hmmm...I hope some people will show up with musical instruments and willing to play. My feet are tired, so I may not be as mobile, but I'm game.Oh boy my feet do hurt though. I"m going to bed.

Just Blabbing.

Well, here is what happens when you go out on a Tuesday night and you know you don't have to get up early on Wednesday morning. Well, early for me anyway. Because of the alleged weather (rolls eyes at the '6-8 inches of snow') and the distances my coworkers must travel, nobody else will be in, so I brought my work home with me. So since I am counting carbs right now, I was drinking Irish coffee Jameson and Tully's instead of my usual Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout. Thus, I am tipsy and awake at the same time.

Being Irish of course I am still clear headed, though I can feel the effects of my pleasant indulgence. Thus, I am watching Shogun, which I have seen enough times now that I can understand what is going on without even paying much attention to it. Now I'm going to see how well I play Majongg Dimensions. hahaha. Who knows when I will go to bed. Maybe I'll watch the rest of is. Blackthorne is just now with Kiku for the first time. Or maybe I'll just watch this disk and write some music. Music is loud in my soul right now. We'll see.

I took my daughter [livejournal.com profile] cheapcarnival to see it.  I admit that at the beginning, I was a little doubtful. I thought I was going to be disappointed. This is because I'm a little spoiled by the 10 anniversary dream cast concert.  The voices here were not as strong. Not as perfect. However, having said that, as the film progressed, it was clear that in the a worthy sacrifice was made of that perfect clarity in favor of delivering the raw emotion of some of these pieces.  [livejournal.com profile] cheapcarnival and I both agreed as we were talking on our way out, the longer we watched the more we liked what we were seeing and hearing, the better we understood what the director was aiming for.

Fantine's I dreamed a dream was thready and shaky and ... amazingly strong in it's emotive power.  Damn right, Hathaway earned that Oscar. Eddie Redmayne's Marius' "Empty Chairs and Empty Tables, heartbreaking in the beauty of it's delivery. I'm really surprised he didn't get one too.  I was also pleasantly surprised by Amanda Sayfried's Cosette.  I usually dislike Cosette's parts, the sopranos usually ruining it with too much vibrato, but Sayfried's high clear voice and excellent intonation carried the voice of innocence that made the part wonderful to hear. She was very well matched with the other voices she was paired with throughout.

I wish only that we had not had to wait so long to see it.  The reels at the second run theater were clearly not well cared for and nearly completely worn out. The movie had vertical lines and scratches all through it. Still for $3 a piece, I think we definitely got our money's worth. DVD goes on sale 3/22.  It's already in my shopping cart on Amazon.com.

The curtains are drawn
Now the fire warms the room.
Meanwhile outside
Wind from the north-east chills the air,
It will soon be snowing out there.

And some there are
Cold, they prepare for a sleepless night.
Maybe this will be their last fight.

But we're safe in each other's embrace,
All fears go out as I look on your face -

Better think awhile
Or I may never think again.
If this were the last day of your life, my friend,
Tell me, what do you think you would do then?

Stand up to the blow that fate has struck upon you,
Make the most of all you still have coming to you,
Lay down on the ground and let the tears run from you,
Crying to the grass and trees and heaven finally on your knees

Let me live again, let life come find me wanting.
Spring must strike again against the shield of winter.
Let me feel once more the arms of love surround me,
Telling me the danger's past, I need not feel the icy blast again.

Laughter, music and perfume linger here
And there, and there,
Wine flows from flask to glass and mouth,
As it soothes, confusing our doubts.

And soon we feel,
Why do a single thing to-day,
There's tomorrow sure as I'm here.

So the days they turn into years
And still no tomorrow appears.

The Holly Green,
The Ivy Green,
The prettiest picture you've ever seen.
It's Christmas in Kilarney,
And all of the folx at home!

(my favorite version here, performed by the Irish Rovers)

PS: Yes I know this is early but I was trying to find my Autumn layout, and it apparently no longer exists? (WTF?) so I put on my The Holly and the Ivy one for now since tomorrow is official putting up the Yule Tree day, and the landlord finished correcting our light switch to outlet connection just in time after nagging him for two years about it! hahaha!

I know you guys get to hear about my music from time to time, but you haven't got to hear the music itself recently. Especially not stuff on my big flute. So recently, Michael and I were practicing and he started playing a nice riff that was in the right key for me to follow. I really liked what it was sounding like, so I had him record it on his camera. Bear in mind that this is not polished. We're essentially writing this as we play, and just recording it to remember.

ETA: If you watch this full screen, you can see when Michael starts sort of playing around and changing things up. Whenever he goes someplace I didn't expect, my eyes fly open and lock onto his fingers to see what chords he's using... There's one time where I'm expecting him to go from one group to another for about three rounds... that I eventually take my mouth off the flute, give him a look and then he changes the progression back to the beginning like I've been waiting for him to do. hahaha. (and yes, there's applause at the end because people actually come to our practice sessions just to see us.)

You just know I had to play around with the guitar doodle that Google did to commemorate what would have been Les Paul's 96th birthday.  I think I'm going to have to play with this little tune and make it into something. Go figure, give me a Google Doodle to play  with and I will STILL write a song in the key of Em!

Notes and chords:

How anyone can see and hear these choirs and really believe that there are no souls, that there is no force or connexion between us, no higher power of any sort, I cannot fathom.  It moves me to tears.

Normally I don't dig this stuff, but the inspiration comes from an old school tune that is still getting great airplay at the skating rinks, and so, "rock it to the bang bang boogie say up jumped the boogie" becomes "Bawitdaba da bang a dang diggy diggy diggy said the boogy said up jump the boogy" and dayum if Kid Rock didn't just pick it up grab that one line out of it and shake it like a rag to make it his. (and I do usually like KR)

Tuesday night is Open Mike night at Dublin Pub, which is (perhaps needless to day) an Irish themed pub in my neighborhood. In recent weeks, I've been going to meet up with [livejournal.com profile] composer2005 and some other people.  Those of you who do not live in Ohio, or perhaps some of you who do, who do not know that Ohio can be someplace to love rather than revile, may not know that Ohio is home to more people of Irish descent than currently live in Ireland. (once you throw in the Scots and the Germans, it may as well just be a Viking Homeland with all the Cels) So we have a lot of  this sort of thing here.  Besides Dublin Pub, there are places like Flanagan's, Harrigan's, Shhhnanigan's, Beef O'Brady's, and various other's I can't think of.  I have heard that this is because beautiful Ohio looks like the Irish countryside, (though I understand that the winters are not so bitter there, despite it being at a more northern latitude, heavy snow is far less common.

Anyway, I digress.  I've noticed that most of the time rather than a typical Open Mike where some guy comes up and introduces various acts one after another, ranging from good to terrible, that here, it's is more of a sort of free for all, where various of the attending players assemble themselves on stage and just start playing stuff fairly well at random according to who knows what and who can play it in what key. Often there are brief interludes between songs while players are teaching each other bits of the progressions.  Often if someone else sitting around knows the song once it starts, or thinks they can fake it, they also get up and play along. So it's a very dynamic thing, that stage act expanding and contracting with the music. The first time I went, I enjoyed the hell out of it, though I didn't actually play any. Well I did play, but i didn't get up to play. I just twiddled along from my seat on the floor. I did get some comments even though I was sure no one could be hearing me, since I couldn't actually hear myself most of the time. Since then I have been playing more, as I'm becoming more familiar with the music I can usually figure something out on the flute, or a whistle, or if not that then singing.

Last week I missed. I hadn't been feeling to well, and since I'd stayed home from work, I kind of felt obliged to stay home from the Pub too. You know the rules. You don't go to school, you don't get to go play with your friends afterward even if you feel better. One of my friends told me that the group had moved from the stage at the front back to the corner where the fireplace was. This week that's where everyone was when [livejournal.com profile] cheapcarnival and I arrived so we settled down and drank and sang and played.  The Irish songs gradually degenerated into a lot of twiddling of yuletide favorites.  I imagine we'll have more of the same next week given that Tuesday will be on the 21st which is when Yule will be this year and then Christmas on Saturday following.

Just before I left a few pictures got snapped of our dynamic little group, one of which contains me and one of which does not. I will share it them here. (Note: this is a friend's locked entry because other people besides myself are in these photos. I wouldn't care for myself, but I can't say so for others, so please don't share outside.)

Some time back someone on my Flist shared some music by Vienna Teng with me. I don't remember who it was in particular. Sorry. But I just want to say "Thank You". I have been enjoying it ever since. I'm reminded because I have a Last.fm radio station which plays mostly stuff ranging from Arcadia and David Arkenstone, to Himekami, to Ailsean and Supergreen X, Mostly essoteric stuff not on the pop charts. Not things you get to hear on an over the air radio station. Vienna Teng is one of those, and she's included in my list of things to play. At the moment something of hers is playing. Very nice. Thanks again for sharing. I really like it.

Because the sharing needs to go wider. My friend [livejournal.com profile] gangrel_pri is in this chorus and in the video, often seen in the bottom right hand corner (often just his score and hand though).

I understand that this piece was commissioned and was composed by the associate director, comprised of letters and poetry from the Civil War.
